Seasons exist all over the world – but depending on where we are, they look, feel, and even sound different. Around 300 years ago, Antonio Vivaldi famously translated spring, summer, autumn, and winter into music in a distinctly European manner with his concert cycle “The Four Seasons”. In her composition “Indian Seasons”, Indian violin virtuoso Kala Ramnath takes a different path, evoking the six traditional seasons of her homeland. Her work has been arranged by the accomplished composer and sitar player Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury. Following the concert’s opening, in which Kala Ramnath joins celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh in a celebration of the richness of Indian classical music, the virtuoso of the Indian violin will then juxtapose her own musical reflections on the cycle of the seasons with Vivaldi’s famous concertos, together with the Duisburg Philharmonic under the direction of Gordon Hamilton. At the height of spring in Duisburg, these two works enter into a cross-cultural, sonic dialogue – one that goes far beyond meteorology. This conversation continues thematically in Ramnath’s new composition “Panchabhoota – The Voice of Nature”. Structured in five movements, the piece explores the classical Indian concept of the five primordial elements: ether (Akash), air (Vayu), fire (Agni), water (Āpas), and earth (Prithvi).
